The Palatinate wine region is the Riesling country par excellence. The region sets the perfect conditions for the king of white wines. With 5,500 hectares it is also the largest Riesling area in the world. The top quality of Palatine Riesling has been known worldwide for more than 100 years. There are records that Palatine Riesling was served at the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869.
The high quality of the Riesling grape makes it the ideal variety for sparkling white wine [in German: Sekt].
The Riesling grapes range from small to medium size and are characterized by yellow-green and black dots. The grapes have a juicy and acidic taste and in the state of ripeness they develop a sweet and aromatic savor. Those characteristics form elegant dry and semi-dry wines with a flavor often reminding of peach.
Riesling is offered in an extremely wide variety. It fits well to light dishes such as fish but is also the ideal companion for rich dishes or alternatively may be drunken as dessert wine.
