In 1991, this internationally well-known white wine was permitted for cultivation in the Palatinate. Currently, about 2.6 percent of Palatine wine cultivation is devoted to Chardonnay. It may be also used to produce the German Sekt [sparkling wine].

Chardonnay is often described as balanced, powerful, juicy and aromatic. If cultivated in chalky soil the wine develops a strong mineral body.
